Standing Strong: How We Are Winning the Race to Resilience

In the face of a changing climate, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the scale of the challenge. But a powerful new report, Race to Resilience: Putting People First in the Global Climate Action Agenda, brings us a message of profound hope and tangible progress. As we reach the midpoint of this decisive decade, the data is clear: we aren’t just planning for a resilient future—we are building it, person by person, community by community

Half a Billion Reasons for Hope

The "Race to Resilience" (RtR) campaign set an ambitious goal to strengthen the resilience of 4 billion people by 2030. Today, the campaign celebrates a massive milestone: 437.7 million people are now living with greater resilience.

This isn't just a number on a page. It represents:

  • Farmers accessing loans to adapt to shifting seasons

  • Families in typhoon-prone areas living in strengthened, retrofitted homes

  • Urban residents receiving life-saving early warnings before heavy rains

  • Coastal communities protected by 18.4 million hectares of restored and conserved ecosystems

Putting People at the Heart of the Solution

What makes this movement so inspiring is its commitment to equity. Resilience is no longer just a technical concept; it is about survival, stability, and shared prosperity. The report highlights how the campaign is breaking cycles of vulnerability by centering those who are often hit hardest by climate change:

  • Empowering Women: In initiatives like the Smallholder Safety Net Upscaling Programme (SSNUP), 52% of loans are received by women. In India, the "Roof Over Our Heads" initiative has supported over 700 women in taking up leadership roles to shape climate-resilient housing.

  • Indigenous Leadership: Partners like Acción Andina are integrating Indigenous knowledge with scientific data to restore native Andean forests, planting over 1.25 million trees in just one year.

  • Youth Engagement: Over 2,500 young people have completed training in climate adaptation and entrepreneurship, ensuring the next generation is equipped to lead.

From Pledges to Real-World Impact

We have moved beyond the era of "promises" into the era of "delivery. With USD 4.2 billion deployed to date, the Race to Resilience is proving that when we align finance with local needs, the results are transformative. From 10,000 bio-toilets improving hygiene in India to smartphone tools helping small-scale fishers in South Africa, the solutions are as diverse as the communities they serve.

The Path Forward: Joining the "Mutirão"

The report invokes the spirit of the Mutirão—a Brazilian term for collective effort and mutual aid. It is a reminder that while the climate crisis is global, the solutions are local, collaborative, and deeply human.

The "Race to Resilience" is halfway to its 2030 goal, and the momentum is only growing. As we look toward the future, we do so with the knowledge that resilience is a "measurable and scalable reality". We have the tools, the leadership, and the proof that a safer, more resilient world is within our reach.
